Don’t Give Us Any Money ………
… give us some time instead. It feels good to donate money to worthy causes but it is harder – and much more rewarding – to give some time instead.
I know - we are all too busy with our work and family. This is, and should be, a priority for all of us. But just remember that no one has died wishing that they had spent more time at work!
Wokingham Lions Club has been serving the local community since 1974 and became involved in organising Wokingham Town Centre events in 1992 when they helped at the European Day celebrations.
The May Fayre & Country Fair started, in its present form, in 1996. It is an annual town centre event held on the first Bank Holiday Monday in May. The main aims, which reflect the Lions motto “We Serve”, are to organise a low-cost family event and enable local charities and other groups to raise funds for themselves. The May Fayre is believed to be the largest street fair in the south of England and it is estimated that more than 20,000 people attend during the day.
But success brings its own challenges. A major event like this does not just happen. Many months of planning and organising are involved.
This is where you can help. Just look around your home and think, “How fortunate we are. How can we give something back to our community?”
Despite the perceived affluence in the local area many organisations and individuals desperately need help. Last year we raised - and distributed - over £20,000. In addition to this our annual Gala Dinner raised over £15,000 for the Thames Valley and Chilterns Air Ambulance!
So if you would like to help those in the community who are less fortunate than ourselves, and enjoy a good social life as well, why not come along to one of our meetings and find out more about us? Membership is open to both men and women over the age of eighteen - with no upper age limit.
All that we ask for is a few hours a month – as and when you can spare them.
