The seventh Gala Dinner to raise funds for our Air Ambulance was held on Saturday 24th March 2007 at the Coppid Beech Hotel, Bracknell. It includes a champagne reception, excellent meal inclusive of table wine and dancing to a live band. There are superb prizes and wonderful items in the auctions.

The hotel complements the evening with special rates for guests who wish to stay overnight and enjoy all the hotel facilities.

AIR AMBULANCE REFUELLED FOR 6 MONTHS

The Wokingham and Reading Lions Clubs have organised their sixth Gala Dinner to raise funds for the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance (TVCAA). This year a magnificent £16,700 was realised which will supply sufficient fuel to keep the Air Ambulance serviced for 6 months!!

The first year’s Gala dinner was supported by the Earl and Countess of Wessex. Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, has since become a member of the Wokingham Lions Club and is patron of the Lions. This year our VIP speaker was Martin Bell OBE, journalist, broadcaster and ex MP.

The event is organised by a small project team which includes non Lions as well as members of both clubs; funds are raised through sponsorship, advertising, auctions and raffles. An additional contribution was made by two of this year’s London Marathon runners donating their sponsorship money to this event. They also attended the Gala Dinner and encouraged guests to further empty their pockets!!

Support is also given by Stevie Horton, Fund Raising Director of the TVCAA. Through Stevie we have had the attendance of air crew and the injured personnel who have had to be air lifted to hospital. They tell their stories of what can only be achieved through the availability of the Air Ambulance.

Since the Lions have added their support, with others, the service has been increased from 5 to 7 days a week during daylight hours. This means that sports activity injuries attended have increased substantially but road traffic accidents are still the major need for this service.
