WOKINGHAM LIONS CLUB – PRESS RELEASE
Countess to visit ‘her’ Lions Club
Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex, Patron of Lions Clubs International in the British Isles, paid a visit to the Lions Club in Wokingham, on Tuesday 21 March 2006 (See pictures).
The Countess became Patron in 2004 and was inducted into the Association as a member later that year at her home.
As she had previously had contact with Wokingham Lions Club when she and The Earl of Wessex attended a Gala Dinner in aid of the Thames Valley Air Ambulance organised by the Club, it seemed appropriate that she should join this Club.
Since becoming Patron The Countess has attended many functions on behalf of Lions at a national level, but this will be the first time she has attended a Club meeting and met her fellow Members.
She will join her fellow Lions over a buffet lunch and have the opportunity to talk to them about their own and the Club’s activities – although she is kept well informed as she receives the monthly Club Minutes.
Background Information:
Wokingham Lions Club was established in 1974 and celebrated its 32nd birthday at the beginning of February. Currently the Club has 27 ‘active’ members and two ‘honorary’ members – the Wokingham Town Mayor and local businessman John Nike, OBE, a Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire.
Since 1974 the Club and its members have given countless hours of community service in their locality, and donated hundreds of thousands of pounds to local, national and international appeals. Among the main activities of the Club are:-
- The Wokingham Town May Fayre, held on the May Day Bank Holiday each year. This event is run on behalf of the Town Council and enables the raising of many thousands of pounds for the stallholders participating on behalf of their Charities
-The Annual Gala Dinner organised jointly with Reading Lions Club for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance
-A member on the organising committee of the Wokingham Winter Carnival and a significant presence on the day with the Lions’ stall selling mince pies and mulled wine with a secret German recipe…
-The ‘Can-Can’ Appeal at Christmas when donations of non-perishable items are made up into food parcels for elderly and needy people - more than 400 were distributed throughout the area at Christmas 2007
-Countless donations to individuals and groups, and practical help to those in need.
