Yesterday Evening the recipient of the Wokingham Lions Club, Gerry Aggett Award, Jenny Gilbert presented the £500 cheque to David Baker of Growing Places. Growing Places is a venture to employ handicapped people to grow plants producing flowers and vegetables which they sell in their shop in the Acorn Centre in Woosehill. They are in desperate need of a van to help them transport plants from their growing centre in Stratfield Turgis to Woosehill and this donation will help towards that aim.

The funds were raised when Wokingham Lions were involved with the recent “Marvellous Festivals” (Tribute Band Concerts) at Wellington Country Park where £2,000 was raised from bucket collections a great day had by all.
Janet Brewer, Head of Fundraising for ADCCT was delighted to accept the cheque on behalf of the charity, and said “Our aim is to fund, build and run a children’s hospice, ‘Alexander House’, in Berkshire which will provide much needed respite care, support for families, an outreach team and specialised palliative care. Our need for funds is always pressing and we are extremely grateful to the Wokingham Lions for supporting us.”
Paul Thomas of TVAC added: “We receive no funding from the government, and in the current economic climate, support from groups such as the Wokingham Lions is vital if we are to keep the service running.”
The Lions Club of Wokingham organise many fund raising activities throughout the year, the best known of which is perhaps the annual Wokingham May Fayre to raise funds that benefit local charities and needy individuals and groups in this area.
