Wokingham May Fayre

May Fayre 2009 was on 4th May. The pictures below show the balloons being released in the Market Square.

*** Balloon Race Progress: The Lions May Fayre Balloon Race was won this year by Lynda Butler of Caversham, Reading, who wins the nintendo DSi. 23 balloon tickets were returned but no tickets came back from the continent this year. Lynda's balloon was sent back from Milton Lock, Cuckmere Haven, just west of Eastbourne in East Sussex. A cheque for £25 and letter of thanks has been sent to the finder of the winning ticket. ***

The May Fayre & Country Fair is the event for which Wokingham Lions are perhaps best known. The event started, in its present form, in 1996. It is an annual town centre event held on the first Bank Holiday Monday in May. The main aims, which reflect the Lions motto “We Serve”, are to organise a low-cost family event and enable local charities and other groups to raise funds for themselves.

The May Fayre is believed to be the largest street fair in the south of England and it is estimated that more than 20,000 people attend during the day.

Every year we hope to continue the tradition of raising substantial funds, not only for the main nominated charity, but also to give many smaller charities the platform where they can raise funds through their own stalls and efforts. This is always a great day out for all the family so come and join us and enjoy the day.

Wokingham Lions hand over cheques for £3,500 each to WADE and ME2 following the May Fayre 2008.
