Who do you think you are?

Debbie Slay

  Name   Debbie Slay
Age (that you are admitting to)   52
Lion member for how long?   2½ years
Why did you join Lions?   Both my father and my husband are Lions, so I thought ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’!
What has been your most enjoyable fund raising activity?   I love Marvellous Festival’s weekend at Wellington Country Park. A great mix of fundraising and enjoying the music with fellow Lions and friends.
What has been your most enjoyable social activity?   Definitely the Charter Night, a great opportunity to dress up, have a good meal and then dance it off!
What is your profession?   Waiting for Retirement!
What are your hobbies outside of Lions?   I love History and Archaeology. A few years ago I completed a Certificate of Higher Education in Archaeology at Reading University and I’m rarely happier than when I’m visiting a site, or down some hole somewhere! Hence I also like Gardening! I also love to travel, from far flung places like Australia and China to our own beautiful island, where I have a particular love of Cornwall. I also go Ballroom and Latin American dancing with Andy, but I don’t think the stars of Strictly Come Dancing have anything to worry about!
What books are by your bedside?   ‘Sarum’ by Edward Rutherford, a book on Baltic Cruising (our next holiday) and the latest edition of Current Archaeology.
What is your favourite song & why?   ‘Evergreen’ by Barbra Striesand. It was ‘our’ song when Andy & I were going out together. I really enjoy songs from Musicals, but generally I love a wide selection of music, just drawing the line at jazz and punk, which I have never understood.
Favourite Sport to watch   Ice Skating sometimes, but I’m really not a sports lover. Football being my pet hate, luckily Andy isn’t a football fan!
Most memorable moment?   My wedding to Andy and the birth of our two daughters.
Most embarrassing moment?   Too many to mention
What do you like best about yourself?   I am not self-analytical, but I try to be kind and loyal to my family and friends.
What do you think others think of you?   I hope they think that I’m good to be around; they haven’t told me I’m not!
Person you admire most and why?   Lots, but historically, probably Elizabeth I, she took a country that was sceptical about a women ruler, had gone through nearly 20 years of religious turmoil and brought relative peace and prosperity.
University Challenge or Weakest Link?   I rarely watch either.
Marmite- Love it /Hate it?   Love it.
Names of 6 people you would like to have to a dinner party   Tony Robinson, Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Attenborough, Kathryn Jenkins (hopefully she would sing for us), Bettany Hughes and of course my husband Andy, who is a great host.
What 5 things would you take to your desert island?   I can’t imagine anything worse than being trapped on a desert island, so I just wouldn’t go!
