The Social Side of Wokingham Lions

We feel quite strongly that as well as giving up our time to help those in the community who are less fortunate than ourselves we should have a good social life as well. This year our social chairman planned a very varied programme for us.

See picture below of our Festive Dinner 2010 .

Another recent event was Charter Night - see pictures below. Click on any of the images for a larger picture.

Wokingham Lions Beetle Drive   We started with a Beetle Drive, which was something new to quite a few members – including our President! Then we all went to the dogs! In other words a visit to Reading Greyhound Stadium. Some of us even beat the bookies!

With most of our brains almost in gear we had a Quiz Night at Bearwood Golf Club with a splendid buffet provided by the catering staff. Next was a fascinating and very informative visit to the wind turbine at Shinfield. It certainly provided us with lots to think about regarding efficient renewable energy.

Every year in December we have a Festive Dinner. This was again held at Bearwood Golf Club and what a splendid meal at a very reasonable cost. Our next event was a visit to the Dinner Theatre at The Mill at Sonning where we enjoyed the pre-show meal and an extremely enjoyable play written by Alan Ayckbourn.

By popular demand we then had a visit to the Hogs Back Brewery at Tongham in Surrey. Obviously we hired a mini-bus so that we could all enjoy sampling some 'real ale'.

This was followed by a Skittles Evening at The Dog & Partridge, Riseley arranged as a 'challenge match' against our fellow Lions at Reading Lions Club. Another good social evening and it doesn't really matter who wins - does it?

The Lions year ends in June with our Charter Night at the Flavell Suite, Berkshire Masonic Centre, Sindlesham when we celebrate the birthday of our club.

We are twinned with the Lions Club of Offenbach in der Süd Pfalz, Germany and have a bi-annual long social weekend alternating between hosting here in Wokingham and being hosted in Offenbach. Sightseeing visits are arranged by the host club which essentially includes plenty of eating and drinking! The Germans show us how good their wines are and in return we introduce them to 'proper beer'. A great time is had by all!

All of these social activities help to create our 'Family of Lions', so as well as helping other groups and individuals who are in need we thoroughly enjoy ourselves as well.
