Vicky 17, was sponsored by Paula Broom of the British Red Cross, where Vicky has been a volunteer for around 2 years. Paula told us that as well as her regular first aid duty work, Vicky is involved with a project teaching her peers first aid within local schools as well as some adult teaching in the community. Vicky also volunteers at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, talking to elderly patients on the wards and carrying out patient care surveys, the aim of which is to highlight areas where care could be improved. Vicky is also involved in other volunteering projects both within her school and in the wider community.

The finalists were judged by a panel of 3 Judges, who all stressed that it had been a very hard decision to choose the winner. Chairman of the Judges, Retired Head Teacher, Gill Allen congratulated Vicky and wished her every success at the District Competition, she also paid tribute to the 2 worthy runners-up Katherine Whatley and Harriet Hopkinson. |

Camilla Potter wins Lions District Young Ambassador Award
Camilla receives her award from Brigid Hendy, District Governor |
The Lions Young Ambassador scheme acknowledges the work of young people working as volunteers and gives them the recognition they deserve... boosting their self esteem, their confidence in themselves and highlighting the charities and volunteer groups with which they are involved.
We were delighted when Wokingham Lion’s Young Ambassador candidate Camilla Potter won the Young Ambassador award for our District (105D) this year. Camilla really impressed the judges with her enthusiasm, her ‘can do’ attitude and her willingness to go the extra mile, particularly her involvement with local charity the Me2 Club.
Camilla represented our District which covers Central Southern England at the National Finals in Dudley, West Midlands and although she did not win she represented the District extremely well. |

ATC (Air Training Corps). Aircraft Recognition Trophy donated on behalf of John Dixon
John joined the Lions in the early 80's after originally being asked to help with running an exemption dog show at the Donkey Derby. This he did with my mother in-law Mary for a number of years. Mary was a dog breeder and they both were active in judging and organising dog shows. He also took on the role as PRO which he then held until just before his death. Throughout his time in Lions he was always happy to support causes to do with youth projects, and in an earlier stage of his life he was in the RAF which on leaving he became a flight lieutenant in the ATC and lead a squadron similar to that in Wokingham. He had also been a cadet in the ATC prior to joining the RAF. It therefore seemed fitting to donate, through the lions the money that had been given in his memory, to a youth group that was close to his heart for many years.

The local squadron decided that a trophy in his name would be a nice way to acknowledge the donation and chose to award it for the aircraft recognition competition as this needed an award. Coincidentally and unknown to the Wokingham Squadron this had always been an interest of John's since his own cadet days, the family felt that this was most fitting.
